Epoisses Cheese

The Trout and I love cheese. We have always enjoyed our trips to Europe to find new cheeses to try. We also enjoy going to Whole Foods here in the states, because they have a very large selection of cheese.

One we missed when we were in the Burgundy area of France, is Epoisses, pronounced (ay-PWAHSS). Unfortunately, it has also been hard to find here at home, because it is very popular and sells out quickly. That is, until last week. We found it!

Epoisses is an artisan French raw cow's milk cheese with a strong odor and runny interior. It is made in the town of Epoisses, a town in Burgundy, a region of France. It does have a strong smell and I have read that the French actually do not want you to carry it home on the Metro because of the smell. I find that hard to believe.

I recognized the smell immediately, but that certainly did not stop me. We so thoroughly enjoyed it. What I found funny, is that the dishwasher was not totally loaded, so I put off running it until after breakfast dishes were added. Well, when I opened the dishwasher the next morning, I SMELLED THE CHEESE! Wow, was it strong and pungent.

If you love cheese and are willing to try new foods with an open mind, you should try Epoisses. With a baguette or a simple cracker, it will be delightful.

  3. Smelly cheese reminds me of my grandfather and Limburger (sp?). I, too, love cheese, and the smell doesn't get in my way. Cheese, bread, wine--we don't need anything else!

  5. Wow this cheese looks good, I've never heard of it. We love cheese & crackers, a little smoke salmon with a fine wine!

Thanks for your visit today...yes I do believe I'll have some of my wristlets in the shop this Spring & Summer. That would be the "Wild Rose Design Co." shop.

  7. I'll watch for this cheese when I'm in France. It doesn't sound like it would be the best thing to keep in a hotel room, but we'll look anyway.

  8. Cathy, I am sure you can find it. Enjoy France. We just cancelled our trip leaving April 27 for Paris. Just don't like the state of the economy enough to know what the future holds. Being very frugal and hopefully can go back next year. Only the second year we've missed going to Europe since 2000.

I'm sorry to hear that your trip to France has been cancelled.

I like the picture of Carennac on your opening page. Brings back good memories...the gîte, the area.

Susan,I enjoy reading your blog. I've tried a couple of your recipes (cauliflower recently)and they turned out very well. You're a great cook!

Yes, I know how much you love France (didn't we rent the same gîtes in the past?). We usually travel in Sept. For the reason you mentioned, we haven't decided whether we'll go or not this year. It's hard to skip a year, isnt't it?
