Four days late but still excellent!!

The Norwegian and the German are about four days behind the Irish, but we did have our Corned Beef and Cabbage today. I have to say, in the 40+ years that I have cooked corned beef, this was the best one ever!! We picked it up at Costco and the brand is Mosey's. It was delicious, lean and easy to slice. 40+ years...that is quite a testament, but very true!!

We also served Cathy's Colcannon. She posted it on her blog "Wives with Knives." It was delicious and made me wonder why I had never tried it before. Thank you, Cathy!

The wine picked out by the Trout was a Murphy-Goode 2007 Zinfandel. It was excellent. Fred on "Bigger Than Your Head" wrote about this same wine. I love reading the flavors that tasters find in a wine. If I may quote, "At 15.4 percent alcohol, it packs a heady hit as well as the sweetness that a high alcohol often conveys. Black current and blueberry flavors, with a hint of fleshy boysenberry, are threaded with briers and brambles, polished tannins and dusty granite, and sweet, spiced plums. The wine slides through your mouth like plush velvet woven with iron fillings. " When you have all these fruits and minerals named for you, you can slowly enjoy a sip of wine and actually taste them all. This wine was a lovely treat.

  2. YES I enjoyed the Zin as well - don't why I think a Zin is perfect for a corned beef but I always seem to pair it with that meal.

It was a bit of a far 2nd however to the Sat night Catalan meat ball meal - Boles de Picolat from Ladies with Bottles blog - I paired this repast with a French wine from the tiny appelation Bandol on the Med coast which I have always liked - DOMAINE TEMPIER is the vintner and its 2003 effort was close to the finest wine I have ever drank except a Caymus Cab 1996! Pure velvet!!
Got to find some 06 & 07 vintages to lay down for 5-7 years!

Schnitzel and I joke about the little need to lay down much more wine to age past the next 5 years or so unless we can find a nursing home with a wine cellar!! Hope we got more years than that to enjoy our own kitchen!! TROUT

If you guys find a nursing home that has a wine cellar and Dale is in charge, let me know! Of course, I will have to find that home before you do, I think.

By the way I am sure that Susan was happy that University of Northern Iowa sent shock waves across the country with their defeat of Kansas, the best team in the nation, yesterday. Go Panthers!!! rw

  5. Hello Susan and a happy belated St Patty's Day. Good to know about the Corned beef as we do like it; hopefully our Costco will have the same brand and we'll check it out.

We also enjoy Murphy-Goode wines, especially some good tasting and at fairly reasonable prices. Each time we have a MG Fume Blanc, think Caesar Salad. ;)

We had a spiral ham last night (invited neighbors for dinner) and served it with a semi-dry Sweet Cheeks Riesling (we don't like sweet) that worked really well with the salty ham.

Wishing you a great week ahead.

  9. I have never eaten Corned Beef--can you believe it? What makes it "corned" anyway? LOL

I will have to go over and see what Colcannon is. I think I need to get out more--or at least get off this island more!

  13. What a tasty post you have! I will have to go to Costco when I get back home. Love the sound of that corned beef. I never made Colcannon, but it sounds interesting; and wine goes good with just about everything.

  14. We haven't had corned beef, good or bad, since we left the US (Don't have it in Ireland). But what caught my eye was the Murphy-Goode - we used to drink lots of that in the US! Brings back memories LOL
