Cannon Beach, Oregon

Haystack Rock on Cannon Beach, Oregon, is one of those places I have always dreamed of seeing.  As we walked the beach toward it, it almost seemed to be a man-made structure because it was such a fantastic sight.

Haystack Rock was formed by lava flows.  It is 235 feet in height, home to crabs, starfish, sea slugs and a place for nesting birds such as tufted puffins, gulls and cormorants.  It is a protected Marine Garden, as it should be.

The village of Cannon Beach itself is a lively town, filled with tourists this time of year.  The beach....perfect.  It was such a pleasure to again be on the Pacific, having traveled from the Atlantic.  As a dear friend commented to me, "from sea to shining sea."  Yes, we have traveled that far and more.  I stopped checking the odometer after we reached 5000.

  2. Such fun reading about your travels, Susan. I've always wanted to visit the northwest...California is as far as I've been. So many bloggers are from Oregon and Washington and I love their scenic posts AND great recipes. I read raves about the food there.

  8. Cannon Beach is a lovely beach to visit, but hope you stopped by Oswald West just south of Cannon Beach. That whole area is my favorite.

  9. Not sure where you are---I've just returned to blogging and have some catching up to do. 5000+ plus miles, that's a lot of miles. My son was just in Oregon for a good while on business, he loved it!

  10. I wondered why the Pacific Northwest enjoyed such a sunny summer; you brought it along with you. Our deepest thanks! Don't you love the Oregon coast, now next time head north for a visit to the wild Washington coast, drive through the Olympic rainforest, take a right at La Push, head east along the Strait of Juan de Fuca and hop a ferry from the Kitsap peninsula to Vashon Island and stay for dinner. Just in case you make it this way again. ;-)
