Big visitors

We had some excitement this weekend when a cow moose and her calf wandered into the backyard. Usually, if you are lucky enough to see moose out west, you are in a car and photo opportunities are rare. This was different, way different.

The Trout took the camera and quietly escaped the house and started walking toward the pair. Mama moose can be very aggressive when she has her baby near her. This time though, they both were more interested in eating the grasses and daisies in the yard. They kept their eyes on the Trout and he did manage to get within 30 feet, but that was close enough for all of us.
Mama was huge! Actually, not such a pretty face. Massively strong body; much larger than a horse.

I wonder where Daddy was. A bull moose is a real trophy to photograph. I doubt he would have been so calm about it all.

We enjoyed seeing you two. I hope you come visit again soon.

And as Kippy sits inside, looking out the window, we hear her saying "Why can't I go out to see the meeses?"

  2. That is quite a "trophy". I've never seen a moose except in a photograph and on screen.

  3. They are incredible animals - great photos!!

I have only seen moose twice in my 16 years in MT -and once was as I was driving around Georgetown Lake! - my first long trip in my motorhome - 5 years ago. It was Oct and no traffic so I was crawling along at about 25 mph when a cow stepped out of the woods and crossed the road in front of me. What was most impressive to me was that her body was above windshield height - windshield height of my motorhome! As you said, they are huge and they look so ungainly, yet they can cover a lot of ground quickly.

Love these pictures. The Moose cow is lovely just needs a little lipstick. Seriously, how wonderful to be able to be amongst God's creations in the wild. If she shows up again, are you going to give her a name. Mooszilla comes to mind and mighty moosey ( the calf). Beats the squirrels in our yard. Sasquatch squirrel has not been around lately but his baby has shown up to the bird feeder.

  10. I think they wanted to use the "outhouse" but wouldnt wait for me to leave!!

One of the more stupid things I ever did-said was to a terrified mother driving along the Gallatin when a big moose ran in front of her car causing her to slam on the brakes - "we could have been killed" she exclaimed!!

I told her that you must be careful on the road around 5 pm as that is when they let the moose out of the pens for the tourists to see!!!! She believed me of course!!

  15. How cool Susan. I'm so glad they let the Trout take their picture. You're right - you normally can't get this close.

I was lucky enough to see a moose and her baby feeding on grasses when I was walking in Idaho one day, but we weren't this close to them. The friends that we were visiting said when the snow storms come, the moose seek shelter on their covered porches. Can you imagine waking up and finding moose on your porch?

  16. Great photos....I've only seen moose in algonquin Provincial park on a few occasions. Once, a bull moose walked across the road slowly and stopped all traffic for a few breathless moments. You had a real encounter there, and the pictures are great.

(And I'm so glad you liked the potato/onion dish as much as we did!)

  18. Great pictures! We saw a moose while driving through Yellowstone a few years ago. Massive animals - and as ugly as they are, they're still beautiful!

  19. We had a pair (mom and pop) that claimed our area as their territory a few years back. We would see them fairly regularly along with their offspring. Then about two years ago the bull was hit by a truck during sugar beet harvest. Mom must have moved on in search of a new partner because she hasn't been seen in the area since. They're so big and ungainly, and can have a very cranky personality, but in their own way so gorgeous. Happy moose watching.

  21. Good grief! And I complain about the odd cow getting into ours! How fantastic to have such a close up encounter - I do think Trout was rather brave . . . I have read that these amazing animals can be really dangerous.
