Smile!

Well, what do you think? Mr. Swan does not have a happy face. It is understandable. He is freezing, still, like most of Florida. The weather is just too unhappy around here. Very strange. But, there is hope in the near future. Finally, the 70's, which it should have been for the last 6 or 8 weeks, will arrive by Sunday.

I know, I know, anyone north of Atlanta thinks we are wimps. This part of the country is full of outdoor activities and when we can't participate because of the cold, we cry...a lot. More books are being read, more knitting, more TV and more computer time. Oh, yes, I also got that dreaded closet cleaned out, so all that is good.

To change the subject, I watched the 'germ' report yesterday and this morning on the "Today Show." It was shocking! In case you missed it, they focused on those bath tub toys that kids play with. You know the kind, with a squeaker that they fill up with bath water and then spray at each other, drink, and chew on. Well, they have been cut open to find black slimy something or other growing in there and when tested, the germs are over the top. Do not give these to a child. Only the toys without openings are allowed and then, clean with bleach often.

Then this morning, they checked for germs on rental cars. The steering wheel and shift were covered with germs including staph. Just makes you want to stay home and read and knit, doesn't it? WAIT...that's all I have been doing. Time to carry disinfectant wipes everywhere, I guess. How come we ate dirt as kids and never got sick?

  1. Yuk, those tub toys sound disgusting, but my kids made it through life without hand sanitizer. I think we are obsessed with germs.

  2. Totally agree with the weather conditions here in FL...yuck. We are too spoiled I guess. Can't wait for the 70's to show again.

  3. Cathy, I really believe the germs you and I and our children grew up with were not as strong a strain. I also believe that by using too much anti-bacterial whatever, makes them stronger...same as too penicillin makes you immune to the results it could have.

  4. I have learned watching the swans in the lakes of Bois de Boulogne that they usually have a not-so-friendly face!

  5. I believe in being clean, but not germ obsessed. Our immune systems become weaker if we don't expose them to any germs...(Although I thought the comment above about disease germs being stronger nowadays because of over use of antibiotics is interesting, and probably true.) I'm leaving for Venice, Florida on Saturday and my daughters and grandchildren are joining me on Tuesday. I hope it will be warmer! We used to come in February, and I'm glad we put it off a little this year, though we had no idea of what the weather was going to be like.

  6. Susan, weighing in with my 2 cents worth. Antibiotics weren't used as they are today. I just don't think the strains of bacteria and germs had the need to become more virulent.
I also can't remember hearing about attention deficit disorder and other conditions regularly diagnosed today.

  7. Love your swan. But we are with a rental car this month; going to give it a wipe; good thing it is a new model.

  9. Isn't that so funny. I have thought the same thing about eating dirt as kids and never getting sick. My own thinking is that we disinfect so much, that we no longer have the same immunities as we once did. Just my own theory.

  11. even our dirt was cleaner when we were kids... I'm sure of it....

...don't forget... take your wipes to the grocery store with you too...or wear gloves. The handles on the shopping carts are gross...and the kids that lick them must be really sick...ick... saw one the other day slobbering all over it and the poor little thing already had a runny nose.... sigh...... honestly, it is getting so bad it is safer to stay home... and don't even get me started on what we are eating in restaurants...I worked in some, and, oh... man...I absolutely can't eat in one... ever again....

  12. I have always thought that a little dirt did no harm Susan - catching colds and tummy bugs help improve our immune system. Nowadays I get told off for not using an disinfectant/anti viral cleaning product by my girls . . . I wonder if the new generation will end up catching more bugs due to over protecting themselves? Or am I just getting too old lol!

  13. I too am sick of the weather here in Florida. We have not been on the lanai all winter. I just look at it from the comfort of my heated house. I saw something on the Food Network yesterday about the germs that are spread when one blows out the birthday candles. The cake is covered with them. Yuk! It takes the fun out of it.

  14. We have just finally made it to 40* and the snow is melting. Back when we were kids the germs were a bit more on the friendly side:)
